My “Erotic” Playlist

I love music.

If I had to live in a world without books, it better have music. Or vice versa. If I were stranded on an island without either, I’d just go ahead and guzzle some salt water and die.

When I was a kid, my parents didn’t take me and my sister to church on Sunday. They’d play their records all morning until the game (football, basketball, whatever) came on in the afternoon. Since this was in the early ’70s, my sister and I went to The Church of Mowtown and The Holy House of Funkadelic.

This would eventually come to an end when my dad decided to start taking us to church when I became a teenager, but the “damage” had been done. My musical education had taken root. When I was in fourth grade, one of the radio stations I listened to changed its format and started playing “classic oldies,” which at the time meant 1950s and 1960s. So while most of my friends were listening to the same Top 40 tunes, I was listening to the roots of rock ‘n’ roll.

I studied piano for several years and learned about classical music, and then I discovered blues and ska music (during its “second wave”). But it was my mother who introduced me to the New Wave coming out of the UK—and that took a strong root inside the fertile landscape of my sense of taste.

When I was in high school, we had a radio station, and I was a DJ for the last two years of my sentence. I learned about playlists and realized that it was just like creating a mix tape, but with one important difference: THE CROSSFADE!

So what I’m saying is that I have a wide range of taste and appreciation of music and can pick music to reflect any mood. I will create a playlist of tunes that reflect the story I am writing. The songs can center around a theme or a character or the setting—anything.

Here’s a list of songs/artist that have inspired me. You may see some you recognize.

ROMANTIC

  • “Wuthering Heights” – Kate Bush (1985 “New” Recording)
  • “Knocks Me Off My Feet” – Stevie Wonder
  • “Take Me” – Everything But the Girl
  • “Tupelo Honey” – Van Morrison
  • “My Flame” – Bobby Caldwell
  • “Astrud” – Basia
  • “Almaz” – Randy Crawford

DP or “DEEP PENETRATION” or even “DOUBLE PENETRATION”

  • “More” – Sisters of Mercy
  • “This Corrosion” – Sisters of Mercy
  • “The Anvil” – Visage
  •  “Feel It” – Kate Bush
  • “Waking the Witch” – Kate Bush
  • “Back Door Santa” – Clarence Carter
  • “Trust in Me” – Siouxsie and the Banshees
  • “I Want You” – Elvis Costello

What songs/artists/albums get you in the mood to get it on? I’m open for suggestions for music to inspire my “dirty” mind. I’ll add to this list and add more categories, but this enough for now.

Jayne Marlowe

Jayne Marlowe is a child of the 1970s, a Gen-Xer looking for her lost tribe. She writes interracial stories featuring curvy Black women who defy stereotype and genre conventions. Her interests include reading, music, animals, Archie comic books, cartoons, retro things, vintage things, fried food, real cars made out of real steel, and people who have a sense of humor. When she isn’t writing, Jayne is getting inspiration for future stories by reading, travelling, and her music tastes range from ABBA to The Zapp Band. She has received more than one indecent proposal in her life...but was too chicken to accept...more often than not, anyway. So she uses them as “what if” scenarios for her books! She is left handed and very ticklish.
